After my complete dissatisfaction with the Fifty Shades book, I ended up finding this one on Amazon. Something about the storyline seemed rather interesting, so I decided to get it a chance. Plus, the cover was a big draw.
After a failed marriage and several bad relationships, Adam Wise decides that it is better to pay for sex rather than women courting him for his money. Against the advice of a friend—and fellow Dom—Adam decides to buy a girl at the auction. Even though he set out knowing who he would buy, something about Carly draws Adam in immediately. He drops $50,000 to purchase her services for a month.
However, unbeknownst to anyone, something happens during the few days that they are together. But the question is how each person will respond to it.
There are aspects of the book I liked and aspects that I didn't. Even though the characters had motive for the things they did, I felt they were all rather underdeveloped. The author tells the story from both Adam and Carly's POV. While this can work and give a unique look at the story, I felt that it was just another element that took away from character development. Honestly, it would have been better to pick one side of the story and stick to it.
I felt the D/s relationship was a lot more realistic than other popular books out there. I appreciated that Adam, especially after confronted by his friend, realized that he was taking Carly past her boundaries. However, it did upset me that Carly didn't research the BDSM subculture enough to figure out her hard limits. And, due to that, I felt that she put Adam between a rock and hard place.
When all was said and done, the story reminded me of an adult Cinderella story. However, it was a little to close to Fifty Shades. Further, the story felt like it ended too soon. Parts felt like it was dragging, but the ending just happened too quickly. I wanted to see more intimate moments between Carly and Adam. Instead, I got a whole lot of blowjobs, lower lip biting, and heavy petting.
If you're looking for a little romance and more hardcore BDSM, this book has it. It is fairly light, and it can be read pretty quickly.
