Q. Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from?

A: J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Mary Shelley (Frederick Douglass would be awesome, too!). Getting a degree in English and wanting to follow it through into advanced degrees in Medieval Studies, Tolkien really, really influenced me a lot. Also, after reading one of his academic papers in class on the nature of fantasy, I would love to sit down and pick his brain. Lewis is much the same, as well as other members of the Inklings. As far as Mary Shelley, Frankenstein has stuck with me since I read it as an under grad. I would love to know why that was her one and only piece. It would be interesting to know how her mother influenced her work, and if she ever felt that she was living in her shadow as well as Percy's.

Q.What’s the ONE GENRE that you wish you could get into, but just can’t?

A: I really wish I could get into straight sci-fi. Most of my family loves it, rave about it, and swap books back and forth (Christmas, lending/borrowing, etc.), but it never really held me. Going into a genre like cyber-punk wouldn't be a problem, but the hardcore sci-fi has been daunting! Here's the kicker, I love sci-fi movies ^_~

Let's step away from the besties . . . what is the worst book you've ever read and actually finished?


After I stopped forcing myself to read books I disliked, there haven't been that many. I would have to say that the Twilight Saga is near the top of my list.

How many books do you read in a week? And in what format do you read them, or listen to them?

I usually only average one real book a week. At times, if the book is a quick read, I'll get through two a week. Sadly, audio books have a tendency to put me to sleep. I think it comes from years of my mother reading to me before bed.




"What book-to-movie adaption have you most liked? Which have you disliked?"

Well, that is a hard question. For the most part, I absolutely hate movie adaptations of books. However, if I had to choose one, I think Peter Jackson did a fairly good job of following LoTR. That is an extremely dense series, and he tried to stay true to the books. My main problems revolved around the feeling I got from the books that were not duplicated in the movies. However, there was no way he could have done it. Ha-ha. my hubby and I often thought that Stanly Kubrick should have filmed the scene in Moria to give it the right feeling. The Shining proved that he had a gift for making the audience feel the passing time. That was needed in Moria.

I suppose, if I'm honest with myself, The Watchmen was not a terrible adaptation of the graphic novel. Granted, the whole story-within-a-story contained within the comic the guy reads was left out. However, I'm not necessarily sure how that could have been added and still work. Also, in the graphic novel, after finding out who Rorschach is, you realize that you have seen him constantly throughout the story. I didn't get the same feeling from the movie. In addition, there is a whole section that deals with the reason Rorschach actually choose his mask and the fabric he uses. I felt that was pretty important to the story, but that wasn't included in the movie. All in all, it was pretty fair. Plus, the soundtrack kicked ass ^_~

As far as movie adaptations a hated, the one that tops my list is Battlefield Earth. It was a 1,000+ page book that maybe had one or two pages randomly selected from each episode int he book all pasted into the script. For a Scientologist, you would think Travolta would want to do Hubbard a little justice in the movie. Honestly, that movie was a horrible, horrible insult. If you've read the book, I don't need to explain. If you haven't, read it! While the book is corny, it is an amazing work of sci-fi that shouldn't be missed. Plus, it is awesome knowing that the Last Battle took place at USAFA, especially when you've visited there a number of times ^_~

Inspired by the inane twitter trend of #100factsaboutme, give us five BOOK RELATED silly facts about you.

1. My favorite reading escape is in a hot bathtub followed by my cozy bed. I cannot sleep without spending at least 15min in the pages of my current book.
2. I will NEVER become a Kindle/Nook reader. Something about cracking the spine of a book for the first time and smelling that new-book smell has powerful sway over me.
3. Even though I have a degree in English, I would rather read a novel than spend time pouring over tomes like Paradise Lost.
4. Currently, my TBR pile is taking up several shelves on my bookcase and scattered throughout the house. However, even with this large number, I keep acquiring more books. My husband losing his job at the end of January has curbed my book buying; however, I have 5 books on hold at the library and my reading-crazy bro keeps bringing me piles of new books to read ^______^
5. Quality time with my hubby is spent with both of us nose-deep in a book. We also like to read to each other.

"If you could physically put yourself into a book or series…which one would it be and why?"

• Man, that's hard to answer! Missing technology aside, I would like to by in Mercedes Lackey's world of Valdemar. Being a herald/herald-mage and having a Companion would be awesome! I love the rich scenery, the characters, etc. Plus, I admit, I still kind of hold out for Van becoming straight *innocent smile*
• If we place it in modern day, I would go for Kim Harrison's Rachel novels. If you read them, you will understand the "why" ^_~
