Theme Song Saturday

Welcome to Theme Song Saturdays, a new weekly meme, hosted by yours truly, in which we share our love of music and books! Since I love books and music, this meme is for fun to try to incorporate those two loves! Whenever I read a book, a certain song -- kind of like a soundtrack or theme song -- plays through my head.

Want to know how to play? Head over to the Theme Song Saturday introduction post to read the rules and get the code.

Here's my song this week:

Spellbound by Lacuna Coil reminds me of the pseudo love interests between Alex, Tybalt, and Toby.  I'm not far enough into the book to determine whether Alex is involved with all of the shenanigans; however, there is definitely a little sparking between the two of them.  Further, I desperately want Tybalt and Toby to get together.  McGuire has been hinting at it since the previous book!

What's yours?  Leave a link in the comments to your post ^_^

"Griffin Shaw used to be a PI, but that was back when gumshoes hoofed the streets . . . and he was still alive. Fifty years later, he's an angel, but that doesn't make him a saint. One small mistake has altered fate, and now he's been dumped back onto the mortal mudflat to collect another soul—Katherine "Kit" Craig, a journalist whose latest investigation is about to get her clipped.

"Bucking heavenly orders, Grif refuses to let the sable-haired siren come to harm. Besides, protecting her offers a chance to solve the mystery of his own unsolved murder—and dole out some overdue payback for the death of his beloved wife, Evie.

"Joining forces, Kit and Grif's search for answers leads beyond the blinding lights of the Strip into the dark heart of an evil conspiracy. But a ruthless killer determined to destroy them isn't Grif's biggest threat. His growing attraction to Kit could cost them both their lives, along with the answer to the haunting question of his long afterlife . . ."

This book first came to my attention because it followed a rockabilly heroine. For a long time, I have loved the fashion, hairstyles, makeup, and classic cars of the lifestyle. Hey, if I’m completely honest, I have a wiggle and cupcake dress (with crinoline) sitting in my closet! Unfortunately, even though this book has been on my wishlist for awhile, I never got around to reading it. When I found out it was at our local library, I immediately put it on hold!

Centurion, Grif, is cast back into the flesh after giving a Take a simple break. What he thought was a kindness turned out to be something that altered the course of history and fate. Now, stuck back on the mudflap, he is determined to keep Kit Craig from paying the ultimate price for his split second decision. He also hopes to track down his wife’s murderer.

Kit Craig, a rockabilly reporter, gets pulled into the political maelstrom of corruption when she decides to investigate a prostitution ring. However, she doesn’t expect the help of a tall, dark, and sexy man in Sinatra threads.

While Grif battles to keep Kit safe, he must choose between a budding romance, the desire to bring his wife’s killer to justice, and his angel wings.

Admittedly, it took me a little bit to build up the steam to really tear into this book. Even though the subject matter was interesting, I just couldn’t find my traction. However, that isn’t a comment on the writing style or the book.

It was obvious that Pettersson did a lot of research into the rockabilly lifestyle, the fashions, and so on. Also, Kit really did seem to fit into the lifestyle. However, Kit just got on my nerves. Granted, it was obvious that she was a stereotypical reporter, but her constant peppiness was pretty annoying. After nearly getting killed, beaten to death, and possibly raped, I couldn’t understand how she is able to easily put on a real smile and laugh. It kind of seemed a little canned.

Grif was the typical 1950s P.I./Dick Tracey: tall, dark, mysterious, sexy, aloof, and so on. I felt as though I was watching Casablanca as I read this book. Aside from the fact that he couldn’t let go of his past, he was a rather bland and one dimensional character.

The whole concept behind the angels and the religious aspect of the book was interesting; however, I found myself getting rather confused at times. The part of the story which followed Anas was a little strange, especially at the end. Also, I wish Pettersson would have spent a little more time fleshing out this part of the book.

The mystery and prostitution ring was interesting, as well as the political aspect. Since Las Vegas was a big mob watering hole back in its day, the corrupt politicians and police fit very well. However, at points, it felt as though it went a little too far. The auction was way too much for me, and it was very hard to read.

All in all, I did enjoy the book. There was a lot of action, mystery, drama, and romance. It was definitely a different take on urban fantasy and angels. However, I feel as though Pettersson has a little way to go before these ideas are fully developed. I am very curious to read future books in the series and to see how Grif’s changing role will play out.

This week is a little different.  Gabriel's Inferno really got into my head, and it has been rattling around in there for awhile.  It is one of the rare books that I find myself composing a soundtrack for.  So, this week, the following videos (no particular order) are the soundtrack I found myself compiling in my head over the time I read the book.  I hope you enjoy!

Sinnful Public Service Announcement

On Thursday, I discovered that my Internet connection had just failed.  After spending a lot of time troubleshooting it with my husband over the phone, he determined our wireless access point is having major issues.  Unfortunately, he won't be able to work on it until next week.  Needless to say, my connectivity will be sparse to non-existent this week.

That being said, I will try to have Theme Song Saturday up within the next hour or two.  I'm really sorry for this inconvenience.  Trust me, I feel pretty disconnected from the world . . .

~ Jacket copy

When this book was first announced, it caught my attention.  Who hasn't been captivated and enchanted by the story of Peter Pan, a boy who never grows up?  Even at a young age, Tiger Lily has always been an interesting character to me.  The idea of a book dedicated to the Native beauty was appealing.  Unfortunately, even though it sat on my wishlist for a long time, I had completely forgotten about it.

After being found under a tiger lily by the tribe's medicine man, Tiger Lily has always been viewed as an oddity by her tribe and with a little distrust.  She was always more independent and like the boys, strong, and brave.  However, after going against the tribe's council and helping a shipwrecked Englishman, Tiger Lily is forced to marry one man she hates, Giant.

On one of her respites from the village and the humiliation put upon her by her future mother-in-law, Tiger Lily stumbles into the infamous Peter Pan.  All over Neverland the boy and his band are feared and used as the boogeyman for little children.  However, something about Peter captures Tiger Lily right away, and she starts risking everything to spend just a few minutes with him and his Lost Boys.  Unfortunately, even though he professes his love for her, things change with the arrival of more English.  Tiger Lily is forced to choose between her tribe, loyalty to herself, and Peter.

For starters, the prologue blew me away!  It was magical, tragic, beautiful, and fully engrossing.  It pulled me in right from the beginning and made me desperate to understand Tiger Lily.  After reading it to my husband, I was not surprised to find him wiping away tears.  Unfortunately, even this amazing beginning had to end.

There were many things in the book that had me confused.  I couldn't understand why Peter, the Lost Boys, and the pirates aged.  The reader is told that previous missionaries that came to the island inevitably died of old age, and the island's inhabitants were terrified of it.  However, aside from assuming that the pirates would suffer the same fate, I really couldn't understand why people continued to age once reaching Neverland.  Thinking about it, I could only explain this away because they were not native to the island.  That being said, it was interesting to learn that the island natives would only age up to a certain point and stop.  However, that point was different for each person.

At some level, it kind of upset me that Wendy ended up on Neverland from an English ship.  Also, we never met her brothers.  She mentions them at one point, but they never joined in the adventures with the Lost Boys.

There were some interesting elements to the story, but I found it to drag.  Part way through the book, I found myself losing steam.  The prologue was so beautiful and astounding; however, the rest of the book, at many levels, fell short.  Further, even though the concept of Tinker Bell being the narrator was interesting, it was rather distracting at points.  I would have rather seen the author go a different route for narrator.

That being said, it honestly didn't bother me that Peter wasn't the innocent little boy with the thimble.  It felt as though the author was trying to make this story a little more realistic, especially with her explanation for the boys' flight.

Even though the dragging aspect of the book really made me wonder whether I made a right choice with this, near the end it totally redeemed itself!  I found my heart rending in two for Tiger Lily.  I even had to wipe away my own tears once I turned the final page.  It's issues aside, it was a beautiful and bittersweet story of young love, loyalty, and self discovery.
